Family and Who We Are

Once every six months or so my brother my sister and I (who are scattered across the country) get together. There are three of us, of whom I am the oldest. We rotate who plays host, and this past week was my turn.

My brother and niece were slated to arrive on Saturday and my sister later in the week. On Friday night, after completing a long work out, I jumped in the shower. As I stepped out of the shower, I felt a presence to my right (which was the door to my bedroom). As I turned I saw three colors, brown, turquoise and orange. My mother had a sweater with those colors in the same pattern which I had sensed.

I have had, throughout my life, these types of sensations. They are not frightening, nor do I think they are intended to be. I think they are simply a message from those who have gone before us, letting us know they are okay, and that they are still there for us. In this instance, I think mom was just telling me that she knew we would all be together, and in doing so, we made her happy.

On two other occasions this past week, while sitting in my family room talking with my brother and sister, I sensed our father was there, alongside us, beaming that we all had a relationship and a bond that allowed us to be present for one another, just as he and mom were there for us.

That is, I think, the real reason I sensed their presence: because they wanted us to know that they were proud of us — not because of what we had done in life, but because of who we were, and because we supported one another, loved one another, and stood by one another in good times and bad.

Isn’t that (in one fairly long drawn out sentence…sorry) the real point of life?
